• Nostalgia sells

    by Parc Signs | Oct 04, 2011

Normally adverts are the thing I try and avoid on the TV but the other night I caught  the new John Lewis advert (other department stores are available!) Their previous adverts have used Elllie Goulding and Billy Joel to pull on the heart strings they are now going for a slightly different approach.  Nostalgia.  Using the role of musical electrical products in customers lives they are portraying how these have evolved over the years and ultimately how JL has also been there through the decades. For those of us who grew up in the 80's the hit of this advert was the waterproof walkman!  Very clever marketing - using nostalgia to reinforce the idea that good old JL's have been around for a long time and one to stick in your mind.  Everyone seems to love a trip back down memory lane and by cashing in on that nostalgia there's money to be made.

iphones have different photo filters so that you can make your photos take on that retro feel - only last night I saw an app reviewed that does the same with video.  Clearly nostalgia is a selling point.  I used to live near an old school sweet shop, I used to go in there (not just because of a sweet tooth) but because of the memories evoked by the selections.  I now see that very sweet shop has taken it's offering off to the West End of London.  How so during a period of economic gloom?  Clearly during such times we don't want to be wowed with new things all the time but take comfort in those things that make us feel comfortable and we feel have little risk.

It's time to give our showroom a makeover and in there amongst all those amazing things that we make I might just be finding room for some of the old school images we have accrued over the decades  - just to provide that nostalgia trip.

  • Protecting your brand

    by Parc Signs | Sep 16, 2011

Launching a new business, rebranding or refreshing your brand all takes considerable time, money and thought.  Have you ever stopped to think what would happen if someone else was operating under the same name you plan to use?  It happens and if it happens to you you could end up having to deal with the legal repercussions of it all at great expense to yourself.  Bye bye brand, hello big legal headache.

So, before you think about a new business name and logo perhaps have a chat with a solicitor to help guide you through the process of avoiding infringing anyone else's rights.   Your business name and brand are integral to your business so it's important to get it right.

Then there are considerations for copyright of artwork but that is a blog for another day......

If you need advice on where to go for legal advice on legal matters covering these areas then let us know and we can help point you in the right direction.
